Countries across the eastern half of New Mexico often experience large hail the size of a golf ball to baseball size. These surprise storms can hit 6 to 8 times during spring. Summer thunderstorm season will not be any better. If your car is caught in one of these storms, it is likely to sustain damage on the roof. Here are tips of what you can do about dent and paint repair before you visit a paint and body repair shop.

  1. Use heat: Heat is an easy way to get your roof back to normal if it sustains a small dent. Park your vehicle in the sun on a hot day and see if it will do the trick. The heat from the sun makes your car roof expand which pops out the dent. If parking in the sun is not an option, use hot water or a hairdryer to pop out the dent. Be careful with the water and hairdryer as they could cause the paint to discolor.

  2. If the heat does not work, try cold: If heat did nothing on the dent, get some dry ice, put them in a glove and circle the dent with it. This dent and paint repair method may be simple, but the cold contracts your car’s metal and causes the dent to pop. Like heat, this method does not work all the time, and will depend on how extensive the damage is.

  3. Use a rubber mallet: You would not expect your auto body repair expert to use this method but it can come in handy for you if you are dealing with minor dents. Take a rubber mallet and from the inside of your car, try and locate the dent. Tap it, not too forcefully, and pop the dent. It is preferred that your mallet be of the same size as the dent you want to repair. You should also remember to use just enough force to prevent more damage.

  4. Use a screwdriver: Not everyone has a mallet at home but you are likely to have a screwdriver. Find one that has a large handle and position the handle top as close as possible to the center of the dent. Tap the screwdriver blade with a hammer using a little force to pop the dent. Just like the mallet trick, you need to be careful not cause more damage if you decide to use this trick.

  5. Using a bathroom plunge: This dent and paint repair method is best if you are dealing with a bigger dent. Using a clean plunge, create suction by pumping the plunge a few times over the dent. Pull the plunger up carefully once you feel there is enough suction. If you are lucky, this trick will pull out the dent.

  6. Take your car to a dent and paint repair specialist: Although these tricks may work, the possibility of causing more damage to your car, especially the paintwork is high. The best option is to leave the experts at your hail damage repair shop to do their job and get you a clean, smooth roof. If the hail did not cause too much damage, the paintless auto repair service will have your car ready for pickup within a few hours. Painting might take more time, or less, depending on the damage but you should have your car back within a day. A professional will also have insurance which will cover the cost in case of more damage. The peace of mind you have knowing that your car is with an expert is also an irrefutable advantage.

These dent removal home tricks require you to be careful. It is, however, more effective and efficient if you let a professional look at your car, especially if the damage is extensive.
